Severe weather likely for the Turks and Caicos

The Turks and Caicos Islands National Weather Service has issued a severe weather outlook which is valid as of 5 pm on Friday, May 31 until Monday, June 3 at 8 am.

According to the weather service, there is a marginal to slight risk of severe thunderstorms tonight.

Periods of unsettled weather are expected to persist into the weekend as a prefrontal trough and a cold front shifts eastward reaching the Turks and Caicos Islands by Sunday, with the tail-end of the boundary stalling over the islands.

Localised flash flooding is likely in low-lying flood-prone areas during heavy downpours or prolonged rainfall events due to already heavily saturated ground.

Total rain accumulation of 1 to 2 inches is possible with higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

The weather service said flood-prone areas in Providenciales include:

  • Lower Bight
  • Along Leeward Highway – near Cash N’ Carry, Business Solutions, Do It Center, Caicos Lodge
  • Downtown Providenciales
  • Five Cays
  • Kewtown
  • Millennium Highway
  • Industrial Drive
