Antigua under flash flood watch

Antigua under flash flood watch

A flash flood watch is in effect for low lying and flood prone areas of Antigua until 2 o’clock this afternoon.

The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services says lingering moisture and instability associated with a tropical wave over area is causing periodic heavy showers over parts of Antigua.

It notes rainfall accumulation has reached in excess of 1 inch in a short time, and further accumulation could exceed 2 inches, therefore, moderate to major flooding of low lying and flood prone areas is possible.

The met service says a flash flood watch means that moderate to major flooding is possible but not imminent in the watch area. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.

Residents in low lying and flood prone areas have been advised to make preparations for flooding to safeguard life and property.

Persons should be prepared to move to higher ground if flooding rains develop or a flash flood warning is issued.

Meanwhile in Montserrat a weather advisory was also issued for Sunday, May 26. It states a tropical wave is approaching the area and is expected to heighten the chances of showers across Montserrat today.

According to the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services, some of the showers could be moderate to heavy at times and accompanied by isolated showers. The possible rainfall total for the forecast period is 0.2 to 0.8 inches.

Heavy and prolonged showers can trigger flash floods, landslides and falling rocks across the island, and lahars in Belham Valley.

Residents in Montserrat have been advised to be vigilant and exercise extreme caution during havy rainfall.
