Steven Gardiner fires back at criticism of injured athletes
A war of words is brewing between Bahamian Olympians as former 400 metre champion Steven Gardiner his hitting back at retired sprinter Pauline Davis-Thompson for her criticism of him and other athletes, who attended the Games in Paris despite being injured.
In a Facebook post, Gardiner said: “To Pauline Davis, please don’t ever speak on me, ever. Because you’ve never been an influential person to many of us athletes and you would love to see us suffer and it shows.”
“You weren’t in attendance during my warmup but you we’re the first to broadcast your loud and wrong remarks to spread lies and propaganda which is pure evilness, but you’ll be just alright. I’ll pray for you just like others.”
In another post, Gardiner said he does not live his life the seeking approval of others.
On Monday, Davis released a lengthy post calling for Bahamian athletes to show “respect” for the country and people.
Davis-Thompson, a former Olympic Champion in the 200m, called on athletes to know when it is their time to give others a chance to represent the country.
“If you are injured, pass the baton to others. Do not come to the games,” Davis-Thompson wrote.
“I completely understand the importance of health in all sporting endeavours, but it comes down to this – RESPECT. Respect for your country. Respect for your fellow athletes, coaches, and your people.”
The 58-year-old added: “Today, I cried for my Bahamaland. I feel the tears of my fellow countrymen and women. My heart aches. It’s not about the medals. It’s about Respect and love for our Bahamas.”
