Shaunae Miller-Uibo’s 400m defence ends early due to injury
A new 400 metre Olympic champion will be crowned as Shaunae Miller-Uibo did not advance out of this morning’s heats.
The 30-year-old, who won the event in 2016 and 2020, ran almost 200 metres before she pulled up with an injury.
She walked across the line in 2:22.29 to finish in seventh place.
Miller-Uibo has had a tough last few years having battled with injuries since her return to the track after giving birth.
Miller-Uibo’s injury is a double blow for The Bahamas as defending men’s 400m champion Steven Gardiner was a non-starter in yesterday’s heats.
No reason was given for Gardiner’s withdrawal however he has been dealing with injuries over the last two years.
He was forced to miss the 2022 World Athletics Championships in Oregon because of a foot injury and suffered an injury in the semi-finals of the 2023 World Championships in Budapest.
Gardiner was the Bahamas’ best hope for a medal in Paris as Miller-Uibo was not in her best shape.
