Rotimi: ‘I Love Dominica’—sets record straight on luggage incident
“Don’t believe fake news,” was Rotimi’s message to his Dominican fans as he responded to a news report claiming he was upset with the country after his bags did not arrive with him for his performance at the World Creole Music Festival.
The Nigerian-American, who overcame vocal issues to serenade his adoring fans, gushed about his love for the Nature Island and its people as he made his debut performance at Dominica’s premier music festival.
He said it’s all love between him and Dominica and thanked the Dominican people and government for their efforts to get his bags, which arrived mere hours before he appeared on stage.
In a post-performance interview, Rotimi explained his words in a now deleted social media post were taken out of context by the local media house that ran a story about him blaming all of Dominica for his luggage issues.
“We know this game right. So, when anyone has a chance to grab a headline, they are gonna try to spin your words. So, at this particular time, that’s not what was said at all. I was just saying that I love you guys, I can’t find my bag but let’s figure it out. I’m here doing push ups, I might as well be shirtless this whole weekend. Somebody, I don’t know who it is. I saw it on Facebook. Somebody had made something up so that’s not at all true. Those were not my words. I just want to clarify as much as possible,” he said.
When asked about his debut performance, the “In my Bed” and “Love Somebody” singer said he was pleased and happy that he was able to overcome his vocal constraints.
“It was a blessing. It was a little difficult at first. My voice is gone so we had to figure out how to make it work. But God is good,” he stated.
Rotimi expressed his gratitude for the acceptance of Afrobeats in the Caribbean, reflecting on how just over a decade ago, he and Wizkid—who headlined the second night of the World Creole Music Festival on October 26—dreamed of taking the genre global.
