Grenada scores first point at 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest

Grenada has secured its first point at the 45th Chess Olympiad currently underway in Budapest, Hungary.

The breakthrough came as Grenada’s top player and reigning National Chess Champion, Renniel Gilbert, defeated a FIDE Chess Master from Cameroon in a stunning upset.

Gilbert, who claimed his national title in Grenada’s inaugural National Chess Tournament just this past May, faced off against a formidable Cameroonian team boasting three chess masters.

Despite the odds, Gilbert’s victory stood out as a beacon of success for the small Caribbean nation, even as Grenada ultimately fell to Cameroon with a final score of 3-1.

The women’s team also represented Grenada with distinction, squaring off against a highly skilled Namibian squad that included three international Chess Masters.

Although Namibia emerged victorious with a 4-0 win, the Grenadian women drew praise for their solid performances.

Bennel Chitan, Grenada’s top female player, received special commendation from her opponents for her impressive play.

As the Budapest tournament continues, all eyes will be on the Grenadian team to see if they can build upon this initial success.
