Drought conditions lead to water rationing in parts of St Vincent

Some residents in St Vincent and the Grenadines are experiencing water woes due to drought conditions causing certain areas to have water rationed as it continues to be a harsh dry season for many Caribbean Islands.

The Central Water and Sewerage Authority (CWSA) issued a dry weather disruption advising customers on the Montreal Water Supply System that due to worsening river flows it has become necessary to increase water rationing for previously rationed areas to twice weekly, as well as the inclusion of a new community to the schedule.

This went into effect on April 9 until conditions improve at the source.

Here are the areas affected from 8 pm until 5 am & 10 am until 2pm:

  • Richland Park

  • Hopewell

  • Simon

  • Mespo

  • Glenside

  • Freeland

  • Caruth

  • Montaque

  • Mt Pleasant

  • Carierre

  • Collins

  • Evesham

  • La Croix

  • Ginger Village

  • Belmont

  • Pomsette

  • Chile

  • Top Victoria Village

  • Akers

  • Calder Ridge

  • South Wood

  • Glamorgan

  • Top Carapan

From 9 pm until 5 am

  • Diamond Estate

According to the CWSA’s Water Managment Alert System, the Montreal Water Supply System is on code Orange and its Status on Watch which means definite risk to supply detected, consumers should activate water storage measures immediately and non-essential uses of water should be decreased.

Residents in unaffected areas have been asked to conserve water.

The CWSA notes that during drought conditions, disruptions may occur before or after the stipulated time and may go on for a longer duration due to unexpected changes in demand and continuing reduction in river flow.
