Clean drains to reduce flooding, says Grenada’s Opposition
The Opposition New National Party (NNP) in Grenada is calling on the government to take immediate action to address the persistent flooding affecting communities across the island.
Last week Grenada suffered severe flooding which made many roadways impassable, affected the water supply to many households, and is believed to be connected to the death of one citizen.
The NNP in a statement is urging the government to mobilise a massive island-wide brigade to clean the clogged drains and rivers that cause these recurring disasters.
It says: “As the rains continue, the risks to homes, livelihoods, and public safety will only worsen if decisive action is not taken. During our tenure, we established the Environmental Wardens Program precisely for this purpose, to ensure our waterways remained clear and communities protected.
This proactive approach saved countless lives and property in the past.”
The NNP says under its leadership, over 6,000 people were employed during the Christmas, Easter, and Carnival periods as part of the Debushing program, ensuring significant progress in keeping the island clean. It says this allowed the Environmental Wardens to focus on critical work to reduce flooding risks.
The Opposition says not only did this initiative clean up the country, but it also injected much-needed money into the hands of the people, creating a powerful economic boost during those periods.
The NNP states the people of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique deserve immediate and effective solutions.
