Caribbean swimmers resume medal hunt on Day 3 of Paris 2024
Caribbean athletes were back in the pool today seeking to win the region’s first medal of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.
First in action was Antigua and Barbuda’s Ellie Shaw in the women’s 100 metre Breaststroke.
The 15-year-old Olympic debutant swam in heat one against four other athletes who had at least a three-year age advantage over her.
Shaw didn’t let the age difference affect her performance as she was out in front with the pack from the beginning.
She completed the first turn in 34.34 seconds in third place.
Shaw stopped the clock after two laps of the pool in a time of 1:14.78 for third.
She finished as the 35th fastest swimmer and did not advance to tonight’s semi-finals.
In the men’s 100m backstroke, Bermuda’s Jack Harvey showed his class by winning heat one.
Harvey, who is based in the United States, showed he was in top form by leading the rate from the front.
He stopped the clock in 55.78 seconds, which was just shy of his entry time.
Also competing in the Heat was Grenada’s Zackary Gresham.
He finished fourth in a time of 58.92 seconds.
Gresham was ranked as the 44th fastest swimmer while Harvey was 39th.
In Heat Two, Maximillian Wilson of the US Virgin Islands stormed to victory with a time of 54.49.
He also led his race from the start to outshine a field that included athletes from News Zealand, Turkey and Colombia.
Wilson finished as the 27th fastest swimmer in the heats and did not advance to the semi-finals.
Puerto Rico’s Yeziel Morales was also in that heat and he finished sixth with a time of 55.76 seconds and a ranking of 38th.
