Captured crocodile dies in Bonaire

Two days after a crocodile was captured on the Caribbean Island of Bonaire, the reptile has died.

Environmental Conservation Organisation, Stichting Nationale Parken Bonaire (STINAPA), in an update said on Saturday evening, the crocodile was carefully captured and transferred to a safe, temporary location.

The animal was promptly examined by a veterinarian to ensure its health. Unfortunately, the crocodile did not survive the transition.

STINAPA said stress is a known risk factor in the capture of wild animals, which in some cases – as can also occur with other species – can lead to death.

The organisation suspects that despite all its efforts, the stress may have been too much for the crocodile. STINAPA is currently awaiting the results of an autopsy, which will provide more clarity on the exact cause of death.

The presence of the crocodile in Bonaire caused a stir for several days as the reptile evaded authorities who were trying to capture it.
