Belizean earns prestigious Harvard Basketball Scholarship

Standout basketball talent from Belize, Douglas Langford Jr, has secured a prestigious full four-year scholarship valued at $700,000 BZD (approximately $350,000 USD) to attend Harvard University.

In an Instagram post, the Belizean basketball star shared his joy: “I am extremely excited to announce that I am committed to the admissions process at Harvard University. First and foremost I’d like to thank God, my family and my high school Coaches. I would especially like to thank Coach Amaker and his coaching staff for believing in me, and making all this possible.”

Hailing from Dangriga, Langford Jr’s journey in basketball is characterised by unwavering dedication and resilience. The Ministry of Sports in Belize says he has been an integral participant in the National Primary School Program, organised by the National Sports Council (NSC), where he developed both his skills and his passion for the sport.

His outstanding performance at the recent Argentina Tournament further established his reputation as one of the premier young athletes in the region, ultimately leading to his recruitment by Harvard University.

The Ministry of Sports states this extraordinary achievement highlights the immense potential of Belizean youth in the realm of sports and exemplifies the Ministry’s commitment to fostering young talent through national sports initiatives.

It says Langford Jr’s success serves as a beacon of inspiration for all Belizean athletes, demonstrating that with diligence and support, aspirations can indeed become reality.

The Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Transport has wholeheartedly congratulated Douglas Langford Jr and wishes him every success as he embarks on this exciting new chapter at Harvard University.

It adds that his accomplishment not only brings immense pride to Belize but also reinforces the ministry’s belief that he will continue to excel on the international stage.
