Antiguan space traveller walks in NYFW Survivor Fashion Show
Antiguan astronaut Keisha Schahaff, known for being part of the first Caribbean mother-daughter duo to travel to space, has continued her influential journey by advocating for survivors’ rights at one of fashion’s most prestigious events.
Schahaff’s space flight with Virgin Galactic in August 2023, alongside her daughter Anastatia Mayers, marked a historic milestone as they became the first citizens from Antigua & Barbuda and the Caribbean to journey into space.
The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority reported that on September 10, 2024, Schahaff participated in the 4th Annual NYFW Rise Survivor Fashion Show during New York Fashion Week.
“I hope to inspire others to conquer their fears and pursue their dreams,” said Schahaff.
“Participating in this fashion show is another step toward reclaiming my power and helping others discover theirs. I hope this moment will empower people everywhere, especially survivors, to realize their strength and resilience,” she added.
The Survivor Fashion Show, organized by Rise founder and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Amanda Nguyen, focused on celebrating resilience and advocacy for survivors of sexual violence.
This year’s event, co-hosted by Forbes and Rise, featured a range of influential figures, including astronauts and Olympians, emphasizing their contributions to global leadership and social change.
Schahaff’s appearance at the fashion show was noted for its significance in bringing attention to both her personal achievements and the twin-island nation she represents. The Rise Survivor Fashion Show aimed to challenge negative narratives about survivors of sexual violence and foster empowerment through creative expression.
Schahaff’s participation provided an opportunity to promote Antigua and Barbuda on an international platform.
