Schools close doors as flash floods engulf British Virgin Islands

Parts of the British and US Virgin Islands are underwater due to flash flooding following persistent showers and thunderstorms over the past few days.

The British Virgin Islands Department of Disaster Management (DDM) said the flood and landslide threat will continue as the doppler radar shows another band of rain heading northeast over the Virgin Islands.

“Some of these rains have the potential to create heavy downpours. With the land already saturated, flooding is likely in areas with poor drainage. People should be careful while driving. If rains become heavy, refrain from using the roads and keep off areas with potential for excessive runoff,” DDM said.

Schools on the British Virgin Islands have shut their doors for the day due to the inclement weather.

In a circular to parents, the Ministry of Education said the hazard posed by the downpours and flooding are too great and it has already caused significant disruptions.

The ministry said teachers will use online platforms to facilitate lessons.

Meanwhile, British Virgin Islands Minister of Communications and Works, Kye Rymer said a dedicated team is available to respond to emergencies that may develop during the floods.

In a statement on Tuesday, Rymer said the government is working to ensure the territory can return to normal when the flooding subsides.

“We are closely coordinating our efforts with emergency services, local authorities, and other key government agencies to comprehensively assess the full impact of the flooding and implement all necessary measures to address the aftermath. Restoring critical infrastructure and services is our top priority,” he said

“The safety and well-being of our residents and visitors remain our absolute highest concern. I urge everyone to exercise extreme caution, avoid all flooded areas, and closely follow any instructions or advisories issued by the relevant authorities.”

He encouraged all islanders to take necessary safety measures.
