Region entering peak of Caribbean heat season

The Caribbean region is not out of the heat yet as near record heat causing significant heat stress can be expected until October, particularly in August and September.

This is according to the Barbados-based Caribbean Climate Outlook Forum (CariCOF) in its Heat Outlook for August 2024 to January 2025.

The outlook says August to October, the peak of the Caribbean Heat Season, is forecast to be considerably hotter than usual with intense (near-) record night-time and daytime heat, with increasing humidity towards September.

Excessive heat should slowly decrease in November, transitioning into the Cool Season from December.

In terms of heatwaves days to expect for August to October, usually there are 15 to 30 heatwave days in Puerto Rico, coastal Guianas, and the Lesser Antilles, and 5 to 15 heatwaves days elsewhere.

However, the forecast predicts 50 or more heatwave days in Barbados, Guianas, Trinidad and Tobago; 25 to 50 heatwave days in The Bahamas, Belize, the Greater Antilles; and likely at least 30 heatwave days in The Bahamas, some areas in the Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles and Suriname.
