Hurricane Beryl claims a life in Grenada

A man in Grenada lost his life during  Hurricane Beryl’s devastating passage through the Caribbean.

According to reports, the victim was fatally struck by a falling tree on Monday at River Road in St George, as the powerful storm unleashed its fury.

This tragedy marks the first confirmed casualty in Grenada directly attributed to Hurricane Beryl, which has now intensified to a catastrophic Category 5 storm.

Beryl made its initial landfall on Carriacou, a small island that forms part of Grenada, before proceeding to batter the main island and neighbouring Petite Martinique.

The full extent of the damage across Grenada is still being assessed, but early reports suggest widespread destruction.

The storm’s impact has extended beyond Grenada, with St Vincent also reporting severe effects and one fatality.

As Beryl continues its destructive path through the Caribbean, it now poses a significant threat to Jamaica, where it is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge by Wednesday.

In response to the approaching danger, the government of the Cayman Islands has issued a Hurricane Watch for all of its territories.

A series of warnings and watches are also in place across the region, including a Hurricane Warning for Jamaica and a Tropical Storm Warning for parts of the Dominican Republic and Haiti.
