7 Common items you should replace often in your home

There are items in our homes that are easily overlooked that should be replaced more often than others, especially the ones we tend to use every day. Replacing these common items could lead to a reduction of bacteria in your life.

We know life can get really busy and sometimes remembering everything can be a chore, which is why we’ve compiled this list of seven common items you should replace often in your home.

Go take a look right now at your kitchen sponge and ask yourself if you would eat off a plate cleaned by that or if you feel comfortable wiping down your kitchen countertops with it. According to Good Housekeeping, you should replace your kitchen sponge at least every week especially if it is damaged or has an odour, since this cleaning tool definitely holds bacteria.

Toothbrush

Using a toothbrush is part of your daily routine and if the bristles on your toothbrush are frayed or you can’t remember the last time you bought a new one, it’s time to go shopping. A worn-out toothbrush, besides being ineffective in keeping your pearly whites clean, also collects germs over time.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a toothbrush should be replaced every 3 to 4 months.

Healthy, clean hair requires a clean and proper hairbrush. While it is recommended you clean a hairbrush at least once a week, over time, no matter how much you clean it, there comes a time you must replace your hairbrush due to build-up from hair products and damaged bristles.

Various hair experts recommend that you should replace your hairbrush every 6 to 12 months.

Loofah

Skincare is a sacred routine, and a plastic shower loofah should be thoroughly cleaned after each use. A loofah holds all your dirt, dead skin cells, other build-up and is the perfect item to accumulate bacteria which can be bad for your skin.

According to Cleveland Clinic Health Essentials, you should your loofah every three to four weeks.

We don’t have to convince you that a toilet brush is riddled with germs. Even after you clean it multiple times, a plastic toilet brush should be replaced every six months, especially if the bristles are damaged.

Bath towel

You know that favourite bath towel you’ve been using for years? Try to remember when you bought it because it might be time to take it out of your bath time rotation. A bath towel should be replaced every two to three years as over time they build up odours and sometimes develop holes.

Pillow

If you’re not having a good night’s sleep, chances are you’ve overlooked the power of your pillow. Experts recommend you change your pillow every two to three years as an old, saggy pillow can cause muscle tension, irritate your skin and even worsen allergies due to the build-up of dead skin cells and dust, affecting your quality of sleep.

So are you overdue to replace any of these items in your home? What other items do you think need to be changed often?
